How to Move Through Your Prospects Biggest Blocks

I’ve found that there are three big blocks that most often come up when anyone is looking at using a professional’s service or getting ready to buy a product.

  • Money
  • Time
  • Timing

This is with the understanding that everything else is a match. They have a need and you can serve that need. They feel connected to you. You have established trust, you both feel excited, and the energy of possibilities is clearly in the air between you.

Then one of the major blocks pops up.

What now? How can you help?

Let’s start with first understanding the energy behind the blocks. By doing this, we are able to come from a place of empathy, rather than sympathy. It is a disaster move, as a service provider, for you to join them in their blocks. That might sound something like, “I know exactly what you mean Ms. Prospect, and there are a lot of things that I really want, but can’t have either. I hate it, too.” This is a HUGE disservice to them and you.

So what you are really looking at here is fear (of the unknown, success, change, doing something positive for themselves…the fear takes different forms for different folks, but fear is fear).

We make excuses because we can’t see the difference between an outer reality and our inner belief regarding that reality. For most of us, we have a hard time separating the two; we make them the same.

It might sound something like this:

  • I don’t have the money now. = I don’t believe I can raise the money.
  • I don’t have the time now. = I can’t see how to make the time.
  • I’m not ready now. = I’ll never really be ready.

Back in the summer of 1999, I was studying in Ashland, Oregon and one weekend we found this beautiful lake to swim in and saw that across the lake people were jumping cliffs. Now, this is something I use to do a lot when I was in high school. So I swam across, climbed to the top, got to the edge and froze. I could not jump off that cliff. Every time I looked over the edge I thought, “This is a fifteen foot cliff; what if I miss and slam into the rocks, I could break my leg, I could die…”

Then, as I stood there, this boy, maybe he was eleven, came up next to me, and asked, “Are you going to jump?” I started to come up with all these excuses, but sighed and just told him I was really scared. And this is what he said to me,

“It’s just air and then water. Just jump.”

As I watched him sail over the edge and then bob up to the surface just seconds later, amazingly to me, I jumped. It was exhilarating! (And, obviously, I survived.)

This, my friend, is exactly how a prospect feels when considering working with you. They see a financial investment, an obligation of time and a challenge. They’re preparing to jump.

So the automatic-human-fear-reaction is to make an excuse (Anything but jump!)

And, again, the worse move you can make is to join them. “Yes, this cliff is really high. You’re right; it’s impossible to jump. I understand how hard it is, so let me call you back in a few months and see if you’re ready to jump then.”

I can tell you, they will never be ready. (I know if that’s what I’d heard, I would still be standing on that cliff, or worse, I would have turned around and gone back the way I came.)

Again, assuming your offer is right for them and they will truly benefit from working with you, then you are NOT serving their best interests if you “just let it slide.” Telling yourself that you are serving them by letting them slide is your own excuse.

The energy of commitment is very strong. Let your prospect know that when you make a commitment the Universe begins to line up for you. Things may start slower than planned, but when you truly commit, it happens. Let them know that, together, you will take care of their concerns (money, time, doubts).

My sense is you’ll hear, “Let’s do it!”

Can I tell you it will ALWAYS go this way? No, but what I can tell you is that if YOU make the commitment to take a stand for the truth about the difference your service will make for your clients (and don’t back down when they give you excuses), you will have a client who puts themselves completely in your process and together you will produce magnificent results.

Go ahead. Take a stand.

How to Get More Done in Less Time

Have you ever had the feeling of having so much to do that your head spins, your energy feels drained and all action just stands still?

Here’s why: most of us have been taught to approach our tasks from only a head point of view. There’s great productivity power in engaging your energy as a primary task-management tool.

Here’s a step-by-step process that has you using your energy to get more results, more quickly:

1) Make a list of “To-Do Tasks” for the day

2) Survey your list and for each task register for yourself what your “energy hit” is on a scale of 1 - 10. For example:

Task: Place follow-up call to person I met networking
Hit: 2 = I’m dreading this!

3) Engage thoughts to “Amp-up Your Energy. What are you silently or secretly telling yourself about the task that has you feeling low energy about it and as a result avoiding it? What’s an alternate thought/perspective that now has you feeling jazzed about the task? (You’re more likely to do something you’re excited about, right?)

4) Thoughts still stuck? Engage “Purposeful Movement.” Again, most overwhelm comes from getting so caught in your head about what you think you “should”, “have to” or “ought to” be doing. Taking just 5 minutes to step away and engage, some sort of physical movement (I use a small bouncy-ball almost everyday!) immediately creates a shift in your energy and opens you up to receive “Inspired Action” i.e. a thought that could never come to you while stuck in your head.

5) Keep track of the evidence of the inspired actions that come to you using this process. This keeps you from slipping back into the old habitual from your head only approach and gets you more excited so more happens more quickly.

It’s ALL About Your Life Purpose

Is Nice Energy Sabotoging Your Business?

I’ll share with you that when I first started in business the image of a leader that I brought with me was an authority figure who has the power to hurt those that are following them. This was because I was so used to being around authority figures who were coming from a place of leading through fear (I came out of the very toxic public school system).

I knew I didn’t want that in my business.

I didn’t want people to feel like they wanted to avoid me or that they had to avoid me. I didn’t want that to take place when I was connecting with a potential client. I didn’t want that to take place when I was at networking meetings. I didn’t want people feeling that energy when I was giving a speaking engagement or a seminar. So instead, I swung way too far to the other side. I so much wanted people - including potential clients and customers - to like me that I would go out of my way to make sure that I was ‘nice’; that there wasn’t anything that could possibly be conceived as fearful or threatening about me.

Now, by being in that extreme opposite energy, that wasn’t attractive either. Clients weren’t feeling the full power of what I had to offer. Sure, they had a nice experience; they were having a friendly exchange, but there wasn’t the opportunity for the full breadth of what I was there to serve to be experienced. That opportunity was missing because where was most of my energy focused? It was focused on being nice. It was focused on being liked.

And that is NOT a very successful leader.

I could see that this was effecting my business, but I didn’t know what to do about it. So I learned. Now I know what to do about it, and that’s what I’m going to share with you today.

There is something that is incredible and sacred and very powerful as you release that vision of leader as that king or queen at the top of the mountain - or that vision of leader as authority figure - and embrace, rather, instead that vision of leader as facilitator, guide, and influencer to bring about necessary change.

And you are willing to release “being nice” so you can step into this place. This big place.

And it is a big place. Which is why it may feel tempting to just be, well, nice.

But as you step into truly being the leader of your business you also step into the full, profitable success of your business.

At first it may feel intimidating, but as you step into it, it’s awesome. Yes, it’s an awesome responsibility but it is also of awesome service.

So, I would say that EnergyRICH® Entrepreneurs are grateful for the opportunity to bring about change and evolve as an individual at the same time. That’s true success and all those who choose to follow you (your clients) come with you; they evolve and change as well.

Unlock the Secret Steps to Signing On a New Client

Before you can unlock the secret steps to signing on a new client you want to be clear about who your Ideal Client is, and be sure you’re managing your energy to shift any doubt, fear, worry, concern or any other lower level energies that might be t rying to sneak in. Then you are ready to set up an effective system for what you offer, speak confidently about what you offer and create relationships with those that want to work with you (a.k.a., gain the commitment).

This process of gaining the commitment from your Ideal Client is of UTMOST importance in your business (whether you work on-line or off-line), but you would be surprised how many people ‘wing it.’ Now, with that being said, it’s also important this system is natural to you–that’s why YOU need to develop it. :)

Let’s go over the steps that you want to be sure you cover when developing or honing your EnergyRICH® Potential Client to Paying Client Process:

Step 1: Be clear about exactly whom your message is for and what their challenge is.

Step 2: Clearly articulate this: “I [power action word] with these kind of clients who have this kind of challenge.”

Step 2a: You prepare your energy. Remind yourself what a joy it is to do what you do and here is an opportunity to connect with someone about it! Yay! How excitin g!

Step 3: Easy scheduling of initial connection (part of operations). I call this a “Get-to-Know” call. This is an opportunity for you to hear more about what they are looking for and to see if the work that you do makes sense for them.

Step 4: Reminder goes out about this initial meeting.

Step 4a: You prepare yourself to truly connect with this person. It is an opportunity to serve from your highest place, from your heart, to share joyfully.

Step 5: You have this initial chat where you verify their challenges and IF you can help them, emphasize this with a story, “This was a client who came to me. They had this frustrating challenge. I implemented my service. These were the results.”

Step 6: You present your offerings very clearly with more than one option of how they can work with you.

Step 7: You ASK which option connects with them.

Step 8: You ASK when they would like to get started.

Step 9: You set the start date.

Step 10: You reserve their appointment with payment information.

Waahoooooo! Yay! You have a wonderful, new client that you are so joyful about having the opportunity to serve. Yipppeeee!

Begin to craft your offering system. Take yourself through th e whole process from the moment you speak about what you do, to the moment you gain a new client relationship. Write it out in as much detail as possible. Include dialogue and any other sensory details that will make this very real for you.

Guest Author Baeth Davis: 3 Tips To Conquer Your Fear and Put Your Unique Message Out in the World

Do you ever dream of swimming in a bigger lake with bigger fish, but you fear there’s a BIG hungry cat just waiting for you to jump so he can swoop in and snack on you! Most likely, in your everyday life, you’re not in close vicinity to cats that want to eat you unless you work at the zoo or regularly go on safari.

In surveying my readers, I asked, “What is the SINGLE BIGGEST THING that is stopping you from putting your unique message out to the world?” Hundreds, yes, hundreds of you replied. Guess what the most popular answer was?

F-E-A-R.

I had no idea that ‘fear’ was so prevalent and paralyzing as to keep people from putting their unique message out in the world! Your ‘message’ is the expression of your Life Purpose in action. If you don’t express it, it’s lost with you. And here’s the kicker: you can’t figure it out BEFORE you go out in the world, you figure it out once you’re up ON THE STAGE, giving your talk. The discovery of our message happens through real life experience, not just thinking about it.

One reader actually wrote that her Life Purpose - which happens to be “Passionate Healing Artist in the Spotlight” - was ‘too vague’ for her to put her message out in the world! How is that for fear talking? Is she doing her healing work in front of large audiences? Shall we wager a bet? The only thing ‘vague’ here is the smokescreen created by her fear. I’ll bet she is NOT doing her healing work, doesn’t have a full practice, and that she’s not on the stage every week. If your life purpose is Passionate Healing Artist in the Spotlight - need I say more? Self-explanatory. The business plan is right there. Unless your eyes are filled with fear…

Okay, so let’s take a look at some tips to get you out of analysis paralysis and INTO action. Success is the result of implementation. You can have dream boards filling your entire house, but if you don’t do anything, nothing will happen.

Tip #1: Conquering Fear Starts With Your BRAIN (…or how to avoid Santa Claus land…)

One of the best ways I know of to conquer fear is to have a decent understanding of how your brain really works.

Imagine you live in cave times with a ‘cave brain.’ You wake up each day, to face the same repetitive routine. You don’t think innovative thoughts, you wait for instructions from the ‘oracle’ or ‘guru’ of the group who has more access to his/her right brain capabilities than you.

This need for external authority and external answers is still part of our brain wiring today. However, we now have a lot more access to our right brain. The right brain is the part of our brain that ‘hears God,’ sees angels, gets pictures or impressions, and breaks through old ideas into new territory. The right brain is not linear nor interested in logic. It responds to art, music and love. It wants to be in the here and now.

Today, you have a choice. You can do the difficult, intense, disciplined work of integrating your thinking (logical and imaginative), really thinking through your problems and your goals and working toward solutions (it’s ALL IN YOU!) or you can hope that someone outside of you has the answer.

You’ll know you’re in the power give-away mode of your brain if you think someone or something will ’solve’ your problems. Products, books, psychotherapy, coaching - all of these things are wonderful IF you know that you are simply collecting information, data and experiences to help YOU solve the riddle of your fear. Nothing outside of you can solve your fear. Only you. And your brain has everything it needs to bring you the answer.

The first step to conquering fear is realizing YOU are the ONLY authority in your life. As soon as you go ‘external’ with your need for reassurance, you’re in Santa Claus land - as in, fantasy land. All the answers you need are within you. Really.

Tip #2: Conquering Fear Means FEELING The Fear

While at David Neagle’s “Experience The Reality of Success (ERS)” event last July, I faced down a level of fear I didn’t know existed in me. David is the kind of teacher who sets things up in a way that you WANT to have the breakthrough experience he is offering - even if it’s uncomfortable. What astounded me was that some people flew thousands of miles, spent thousands of dollars and still refused to take the one simple action that would forever change their relationship to their lives and their bank accounts - and I do mean FOREVER! As in permanent, long-lasting, mind- expanding, soul-blossoming change!

But these few folks said, “No way.” They quit early, went to bed, or went home. Personally, I have wayyyy too much pride to quit - especially in breaking through my fear. As a client said today, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.”

The one place I know I can’t quit is when I’m afraid. The cost is way, way, way TOO HIGH. This life is not a dress rehearsal. THIS IS IT! The KEY is this: to conquer your FEAR, you MUST FEEL the fear. At David’s event, each person has their own unique experience, their own unique breakthrough actions to take to fulfill the process he initiates. My unique process and the actions I needed to take surprised and baffled me and my knees were knocking most of the time. That was EXCITING because I KNEW that feeling the fear fully brought my goals closer to me, rather than pushing them further away. The folks sitting at my table finally realized when I dissolved into sobbing tears for the umpteenth time that I was just RELEASING emotion.

Feeling your feelings won’t get you eaten by that cat, but not feeling them might. Are you willing to look silly, feel embarrassed, lose control, dissolve into tears, throw a tantrum to breakthrough your fear? If not, you’re more in allegiance to the fear than your freedom.

Tip #3: Conquering Fear Means STOP LISTENING TO Fear Mongers

Okay, this is the last tip for today and a quick one. Why on Earth would you listen to people that fill you with fear? I’ll tell you why (you knew I would!). Because it’s ’safer’ to your ‘cave brain’ to stay safe in the tiny fishbowl than to jump over the cat. Filling yourself with fear gives you all the ammunition and excuses you need to do nothing. Because if you DO something, you will FEEL the fear - and it may make your knees knock and your teeth rattle. Doing something also means giving up your dependence on an outer authority to tell you what to do. Only YOU know what is right for you. Only YOU.

But what are your choices? Feel afraid and do nothing or feel afraid and have the world applauding your message?

Ready to Breakthrough Entrepreneurial Fear and Make More Money?

Most business coaches don’t go near talking about fears and doubts, but my experience has shown me these lower level energies are extremely crucial to address if you are serious about being an EnergyRICH® Entrepreneur.

First step? Embrace that these emotions are valid and completely understandable.

As an entrepreneur you’ve chosen to really stand on your own two feet. You are a renegade. This is very different from working for someone else. The objective isn’t about ignoring or hiding from these feelings; it’s simply about managing them when they appear. To pretend they don’t exist or get down on yourself when they show up just keeps you stuck in the low-level energy of these emotions and further away from your success.

One of the best ways you can manage your energy around fear is to have a clear, powerful vision of what you want. Great success stories start with a compelling vision that pulls you forward, even on those days when you are feeling very doubtful about your business.

So then, you have to ask yourself–what’s my vision?

Too many business owners float along, believing they do have a vision, when in reality, they don’t. I often hear things like: “I want to transform people’s lives.” This is not a vision. If you REALLY do want to transform people’s lives, then your vision must be clear, focused, and electrifying! It’s gotta get your heart pumpin’ and specifically zero in on how you will serve the people you are meant to connect with.

Another example I often hear sounds like this, “I want to get more clients.” Again, this is nothing more than an unclearly spoken minor goal. This lack of clarity is a true “Come on in!” for all those fears and doubts. The vaguer you are, the more room for the mind to say, “You can’t do that. How are you ever going to make that happen? I can’t get my arms around that. We’re outta here.”

Here are 7 steps to focus your vision and move it from your head into your heart:

Clear the Decks Step #1: Look At How Fear Has Affected Your Business Actions

I don’t recommend dwelling here, but we do need to have an understanding of where we’ve been to get clear about where we want to go. So take some quiet time to connect with yourself and go inside.

List ways fear and/or doubt led you to under-value, sell-out, or give away your services in the past. Just let the list flow and resist the temptation to get down on you. You are going through this so you can do it all differently the next time around.

Clear the Decks Step #2: Look at How Fear Has Affected Your Business Speak

One of the biggest blocks that I see facing entrepreneurs is a resistance to talking about what you do. There is a fear of being questioned, judged, called out as a fraud, or jumping ahead and assuming the person you’re speaking to doubts what it is you have to say. The thing is, if you don’t tell people what you do, then no one will know about it. I know that sounds silly and obvious, but it’s true, right? It’s like throwing away a gift before you’ve unwrapped it. You don’t even know what it is, but you’ve determined it’s no good.

It is a MUST to shift the vision around how you speak about what you do. So let’s start by listing times when fear and/or doubt affected the way you spoke about your services in the past.

Clear the Decks Step #3: Look At How Fear Has Affected Your Productivity

Entrepreneurs can be experts at appearing busy. They check email, move papers around on their desk, run errands, research websites, and have coffee meetings. At the end of the day, not one action has been in support of the growth of their businesses. This is about hiding. You tell yourself that you’re busy, you tell others you’re busy, but when it comes down to it, we know we’re avoiding what really needs to be done. And that’s about putting ourselves out there.

Let’s be honest. List ways fear thwarted your productivity in the past. It’s the best way to move through it all. The relief and success on the other side is so worth it.

Clear the Decks Step #4: Put the Fear Pieces Together

Looking back at the 3 lists you created, what can you identify as your main fear? What are you afraid of?

There is usually one main thread that connects it all. One big “yikes” that we’re convinced if THAT happens it will be the end of us.

What is that for you?

Clear the Decks Step #5: Connect the Doubt Dots

Looking back at the 3 lists you created, what are you doubtful about? This is the sticky part. This is the part where most folks want to jump ship and blame it all on outside stuff (my work area is a mess, my family doesn’t support me, it rained today), so they get stuck, totally stalled in their tracks.

It’s tempting, I admit, to want to abort. My coaching request here is…don’t. Every time you doubt yourself, go back to your vision and ask, if not me, then who?

Clear the Decks Step #6: Make Peace

What are some ways you can begin to “make peace” with your doubts and fears?

First, start by looking at why these little buggers are showing up. Are they trying to protect you? Is it natural to want to stay with what you know? Did this path work for you at some point in the past?

Thank them for the messages of guidance they are giving you. Every time you feel a ‘pang’ of fear or doubt, it’s a message something is off track from your vision. So you gently guide yourself back. Give yourself some powerful self-talk (I CAN do this!) and begin releasing the fear as you put one foot (or one toe if you need to start there) in front of the other.

Clear the Decks Step #7: Make a Choice

What do you want more: fear or success? If you chose success, clearly state WHAT you are inspired to create. So instead of the loose “I want to make a difference” story, envision something state-of-the-art, specific, juicy, dripping with the details of what excites you and attach a time frame to it. Go for it!

How does that feel? Now, what are you willing to do to create that?

Your EnergyRICH® Call To Action

1. Find someone you can speak to about these entrepreneurial doubts and fears. Be very conscious about who you choose. Often individuals who don’t have their own businesses cannot completely relate, even if they are one of our closest companions. Ask for support. Ask for accountability.

2. Put this into consistent practice.

3. Continue to develop techniques that are easily available to you, which you can reach out and grab onto during times of fear and doubt, which can help to restore your energy and confidence.

4. Accept this road will become smoother, but it will be constant. As an EnergyRICH® Entrepreneur, you are on a constant road of growth and expansion. Better to embrace all that comes with that; otherwise, you’ll stay right where you are in all areas.

EnergyRICH® Hint: Oh, and prospects smell fear and doubt from a mile away. You want to step up to be present to those you serve and for yourself. The result is extremely powerful.
